These books are catalogs, marine stores guides, that use a 6 digit coding system which was developed by several senior purchasing agents who saw the need for a global language for the purpose of purchasing ship supplies.
The ISSA group was founded in 1955 and now represents over 2,000 ship suppliers world wide, while the IMPA group was started in 1978 and has grown into a world renowned association. The IMPA and ISSA systems cover over 42,000 products, virtually anything a ship will need for its voyage.
One of the most common products used by the deck and engine departments aboard the ships is joint sheeting. Joint sheeting is more commonly known as gasket sheeting in the US. It ranges from rubber sheeting to compressed fiber sheets to graphite to PTFE and beyond. Other countries manufacture these joint sheets under international brand names such as:
